Week 9a

This week we had to create a persona for our non profit website. Here is mine:

My persona is based on what I was told most people used the website for. Since this non-profit is not an adoption center for blind cats, but rather a place where they could live out their lives happily, they said they focus more on getting donations and sponsors. Therefore I created someone who would likely be looking to sponsor a cat or donate, or maybe even volunteer from time to time.

Week 8: Outside of Class - Style Inventory

This week we had to complete a style inventory. Here is mine:

Week 8b

Today in class we discussed visual inventories and watched a video about them. We then were able to begin making ours. I only got through a few relating to the concept of the website. Here is mine so far:

Week 8a

Our next project is to do a website for a nonprofit organization. Our first step is to choose three and then call them and ask about what they do and what they use their website for. Here are my organizations:

Palomacy Pigeon and Dove Adoptions (http://www.pigeonrescue.org/):

This charity described themselves as a group who saves birds, specifically pigeons and doves. In San Francisco, they receive hundreds of domestic pigeons and doves in shelters where they are not being adopted. Because of this, many end up getting euthanized. Palomacy aims to end this problem by saving and adopting out these birds. They said that their website has a few primary purposes. Since this nonprofit runs on volunteers, recruitment is one big part of their website. Another important aspect is showing the birds they have available for adoption to those interested. Educating the public about both the issue of rescue doves/pigeons and also the mission of the nonprofit is also important, so a lot of what they have on their website is aimed towards education. Finally, donations are also a very important part of the site and can be done through the purchase of merchandise in their store, or through  PayPal/credit card.

Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (http://www.greyhoundadoptiontx.org/):

The Greyhound Adoption League of Texas was explained to me as a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing greyhounds who were race dogs and adopting them out to people and families. They talked about why having a greyhound rescue was important, because all race dogs are required to retire after 2 years, therefore there are many young dogs that need homes to live out the rest of their lives. I asked about what they used there website for and they said it was for several reasons. One of the most important is to promote fundraising events for their organization. They also said that information about the greyhounds for adoption was also important. In addition to this, information about the dogs as pets was also important because they felt education was one of the most important elements of their nonprofit. They also used the website to acquire donations.

Blind Cat Rescue (https://blindcatrescue.com/):

When I asked what the Blind Cat Rescue was about, they told me that their passion was rescuing blind cats from shelters. The reason for this was because normal shelters often euthanize blind cats because they were considered un-adoptable. Since it seemed like there was nowhere else to go for these cats, this nonprofit was created. I asked what was most important about their website. To them, the main focus is on the cats and caring for them. The website is their way of showing the cats they have, which they do not adopt out. They also are constantly in need of donations both monetarily, but also items needed to care for the cats, so having a place where people can see what's needed and donate is important to them. Sponsoring a cat is one of the most important parts of their website, and they try to emphasize sponsorship. They are also always looking for volunteers to help.

Week 7b

Today in class we presented our final websites and got critiqued. We were asked to put up what was said about our sites. Unfortunately, only one of my classmates spoke about my site. However, I still have a short list of what was said, which is:

  • Style carries well across all pages
  • Menu bar could be larger in height
  • Footer dots could diffuse more
  • Schedule text should be able to be selected
  • Separating lines should be dots instead of solid lines
As I already said, not much was critiqued on my site, probably due to the time constraint placed on us in order for the whole class to get done. However, everything that was said is fair and I agree. For the future, I will have to think about these smaller things. Receiving critique like this only allows for me to push myself further as I commence designing websites, and so, I am grateful for what was said.

Week 7: Outside of Class - Final Website

This week we had to turn in our final websites. So, here is mine:

Overall, I am happy with my site, however, it isn't perfect. I hope in my next project I can push myself even further.

Week 7a

Today in class we had to meet with 2 other people to get feedback on our websites so far. I met with Leah and Sam. Leah said she really enjoyed where I was going with my site and felt it was cohesive as far as design. However, she felt that the blue band at the bottom of the page was unnecessary. She also told me that there were some areas which felt tight in terms line spacing. Sam also felt that my design was cohesive and really found the way I presented the guests to be successful. She said that the schedule on the about page felt a little large. I also critiqued their pages. I found what they said to be helpful and will continue to build on my site for next class, when it is due. I feel pretty confident in my design and hope that the class will enjoy it.

Week 6: Outside of Class

For Monday, we had to have our secondary page completely finished and our third one mapped out. I am glad I found a way to fix a lot of the issues I was having with color, as in, I wasn't getting enough color in my pages. Anyway, here is my about page and then also the directions page layout:

My plans for the directions page are to create a map myself and to include similar elements as the last two. I'm also interested in hearing more feedback and such from fellow students about how I can improve even further.

Week 6b

Today in class we discussed our web pages and got feedback. A lot of the stuff I need to fix is  minor thankfully. We also talked about the second page and our designs for it. I have some stuff I need to do for that, some of which I fixed in class. Most of it was just design things like spacing and other small issues like that. Anyway, here is my about page:

I tried to include a lot of the same elements from the home page so that there would be cohesion. For next class we have to have this completely done and our final page mapped out.

Week 6a

Today in class we discussed our front pages and then were given the assignment to finish it up. I had a lot of issues trying to figure out how to display information in a fun way. However, after many trials and errors, I think I finally figured it out. Here is my front page:

Next we have to do our about page. I forsee having similar issues with that as I did with this page, however, I am sure I will be able to figure it out. A lot of the feedback I have received already is definitely applicable as I continue doing this project.
